Facebook is a PIMP!

So, your 13 year olds are accessing Facebook, and I know there are much younger children accessing Facebook.  Facebook is not protecting your kids and these groups and images can easily be accessed from a mobile phone where your parental controls don’t exist.

In 5 mins between Scrabble moves this morning (whilst checking out a random opponent who’s image slightly disturbed me) this what I found.

These groups, many of them open, have no place where one can report them.   The profile photos of some of their members (no pun intended) displayed across the top of the page show simulated (I hope) sexual acts, sexual positions and semi naked bodies. THANKFULLY NO BREASTFEEDING (because Facebook deletes images of that!)They have no place on Facebook and this is just a small sample of 100’s probably 1000’s.  Your children can access these easily.   Many of these groups are set up specifically to attract and target vulnerable young people.   These very young people could well find themselves invited into child prostitution and peadophile rings.

(I’ve added some tags and no that some of the hits on this page will be in the hope of something to see!).  That’s the internet 😦

There was a time when you’d have to go into the newsagent, be tall enough (and perhaps bold enough) to reach up to the top shelf, be old enough to read before you’d even find yourself at risk from a predatory group.  Now all you have to do is be able enough to get yourself a Facebook profile.   Your child (daughter/son) can sit in their room (or at school) and join these groups completely without your knowledge.  Do you want that?

There is something wrong, something very wrong with us as a society that we are happy to be lulled along by the cute fluffy kitten images, the games  (Candy Crush)and the fun we have on Facebook and ignore the darker, seamier stuff going on just over the page, and it really is JUST OVER the page.

The random Scrabble opponent looks like one of those very girls/women who the groups target.  Seductive, innocent pose and looks about 15.    I suspect that she is also using a word finder, but that’s by the by.

So, how can we make Facebook take responsibility for it’s responsibilities?  I have no idea.  I don’t think they care.  Just as long as we don’t have to look at images of breasts being used for their original job, Facebook seems happy.

  1. Reblogged this on musings from outside the asylum and commented:

Re blogging after watching the Channel 4 programme, Porn on the Brain.
We have entered a new era where young children, a young as 10 perhaps, are exposed to violent and extreme porn before they’ve even discovered what normal sex is.
Our children and grandchildren are growing up and believing that what they’re seeing is how it is meant to be.

KathytheSane (who has sometimes been described as Mary Whitehouse (the social activist) asking you to pay attention and not dismiss this.

  2. I hate the dark side of the internet and do my best to protect my own children, and am amazed that most parents don’t see unlimited, uncontrolled internet time as any type of risk.

  3. Some don’t know how, some don’t care and some don’t realise how ineffective parental control is.
    Thanks for your comment 🙂
